appeal for project group members
1st February 2022
Do you have time to give?
Part 1A of the improvement work at St Mary’s is now well advanced and we expect the contractor to hand the church back to us in early April in time for Easter services.
Having concentrated for a decade on the challenge of finding sufficient money to pay for this work, St Mary’s is now faced with the next challenge.
St Mary’s does not receive any financial support from any source for the church building so needs to generate income for on-going maintenance, some significant repair tasks and to pay the heating bill, which may be somewhere between £8,500 and £16,000pa.
Hopefully, once we re-open we will gradually re-build our Friday and Sunday congregations, so shall receive some funds from congregational giving, but for the moment, following years of members drifting elsewhere because of the state of the church and the intermittent lack of a priest, we are a very small congregation. So, we need to be more proactive in generating income.
We have a Project Group which has been pushing the improvement scheme forward and applying for grants. The focus of that Group is now developing to encompass the task of generating on-going income through:
1. encouraging visitors, who will donate and buy tea/coffee/cake and pay for guided tours
2. encouraging organisations to hire the church as an event venue and
3. organising fundraising events (initial plans are for a concert to celebrate re-opening, a concert series and a programme of talks).
Currently, St Mary’s Project Group includes David Haire, Hull University Hospital’s Fundraising Director, our part time Priest-in-Charge Fr Ian Walker, churchwardens Hilary Newton and Olga Li La-Vigars, PCC treasurer Peter Gibson, lawyer John Habergham and me.
The purpose of this appeal is that we need additional Project Group members, who have a real interest in St Mary’s, can provide experience, ideas and who have time to ‘do stuff’.
If you are able to become involved that would be terrific?
Alternatively, you may know others who might be interested?
We are not simply seeking volunteers to man the church when it’s open, though if you would like to volunteer for that you would be very welcome indeed.
This appeal is for people willing to become involved at Project Group level with planning for and implementing all that is needed for opening St Mary’s to visitors, for serving light refreshments and for managing events.
If you’d like to find out more, please email us.
Thanks.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Everything at St Mary’s is done voluntarily by devoted members – from opening the church, general maintenance, cleaning and making tea to bell-ringing, singing in the choir, arranging the flowers, hospitality days on a Thursday and Friday, fundraising, grant applications and planning improvements to our church building to serve our congregation, our community and our visitors better.
If you have some time to give and would like to join us, there are a number of different opportunities for taking part in services and others activities connected to the general running of St. Mary’s:
