improvements given go ahead
November, 2020
We are pleased to announce that the Consistory Court of the Diocese of York has granted Faculty approval for the proposed Part 1A works at St Mary’s.
The scheme of works will see long planned and desperately needed improvements to St Mary’s interior, including the installation of three new WCs, one with wheelchair access, the refurbishment of the current WC in the vestry, basic kitchen facilities, a new flagstone floor to a large proportion of the church, a meeting/counselling/workshop space, heating, new electrics & lighting and store cupboards.
Faculty approval
Designs, plans, photographs and other documents were submitted to the Diocese for consideration in April. A public notice was displayed giving an opportunity to all interested to comment. Input from consulting bodies, including the Church Buildings Council, Heritage England, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and The Victorian Society, was sought. Following consideration of the proposals, comments from consultees and a visit to St Mary’s, the Worshipful Canon Peter N Collier QC, Chancellor of the Diocese and Official Principal of the Lord Archbishop of York, granted faculty authorising the carrying out of the works on 27 October, 2020.
With Faculty in place, and having received good tenders from four different potential contractors, we are in a position to start, subject to top up funding.
Funding
We continue our efforts to put the funds in place for the full scheme of works, which will cost for this first phase Part 1A in the region of £818,000 exc VAT. So far, we have achieved a budget of £713,000, so we still need to secure an additional £105,000 to complete all the projects. However, we await the outcome of applications for Allchurches Trust, National Churches Trust and Wolfson Foundation grants. If we achieve grants as hoped and assuming we will receive a Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme, which distributes grants for VAT paid on eligible repairs and alterations to listed places of worship, we will have almost the total budget to complete the work.
Adding to confidence in the future, we also have the commitment of the Diocese shown in the licensing of our new Priest, Father Ian Walker, on 1 Nov 2020, and a clear way forward developing a close, complementary and supportive relationship with Hull Minster in the next three years.
In conclusion, as an act of faith we are ready to start in January 2021.

Latest - May 2020:
Good News! Plans for new toilets, kitchen facilities, heating, electrics and floor were considered by the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches in May. The DAC has confirmed it has ‘recommended’ our plans subject to additional information on some aspects. This means that Public Notices will be issued shortly.
Grant news: We are also delighted to announce that St Mary’s has secured a grant of £5,000 from the Diocese of York’s ‘Support for Parish Buildings Grant Scheme’ towards the cost of replacing of the church's electrical system, part of our planned major programme of works.

MAKING ST MARY'S FIT TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY
Licenced in 1313, St Mary’s, Hull’s oldest church, is still serving as a place of worship and still serving the community in its inner city parish.
But the stark fact is that St Mary’s future is in peril if funds cannot be found for renewal work to make the church fit to continue its purpose - fit to thrive and fit to expand our role in our community. It is inevitable that a building dating back to 1313 will need work to ensure its continued use. St Mary’s external fabric is basically good apart from some focussed remaining areas of high level eroded masonry. But its interior needs urgent and essential attention.
To address the need for new facilities and to replace defunct services, we need to raise over £1 million.
We have made good progress but we still need your help. To achieve our first stage plans we still need to secure £168,000.
St Mary's needs:
Heating
The church is without heating and bitterly cold in winter – ancient, decayed heating ducts are under the floor and the floor needs to come up to install a new heating system.
Floors
The floor of quarry tiles is uneven, potentially dangerous and difficult for wheelchair users, blind and partially sighted people and for push chairs.
Toilets
We have one toilet and wash basin, which are in a poor state, and, located in the Wardens' Vestry, are inaccessible.
Kitchen
We do not have one!
Electrics
St Mary’s electrical system is in need of complete overhaul beginning with the incoming meter and distribution cupboard and switchgear and extending through to all of the power and lighting.
Storage space
We have extremely limited storage space which means that items are pushed under pews.
BACKGROUND
Sensibly, in the last 20 years the focus of attention has been the external fabric and this means the building of St Mary’s is generally sound and weather tight. Now the task is to improve the interior by installing these new facilities and replacing the defunct services.
The PCC carried out an audit asking members of the congregation to comment on the future for the church building they would like to see. St Mary’s has also benefited from input and advice from the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches. The DAC is strongly supportive of the re-ordering principles put forward by the PCC.
