ringing out across the old town

ringing out across the old town

Picture
St Mary’s bells ring out across Hull’s Old Town on Tuesday evenings, Sundays, for weddings and for special occasions thanks to a band of 12 regular bell ringers.

Providing an uplifting musical backdrop to the civic and historic heart of the city, the bells ring to call people to worship and to mark moments of commemoration, peace and celebration.

The ‘ring of six’ bells mostly date from 1727, so are approaching their 300th year.  Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the band, St Mary’s bells were restored in 2002.

Unique in that are the only anti-clockwise ring of bells in the area, there is debate over why St Mary’s bells are contrary?  Some say that the bells, cast by the same person as the clockwise ring of bells at Hull Minster (formerly Holy Trinity), were hung anti-clockwise in contrast to St Mary’s larger neighbour, but nobody knows.

Due to St Mary’s high profile location at the centre of the Civic Quarter and Old Town of Hull and due to the bells’ historic appeal and musical quality, St Mary’s receives regular requests for use of the bells from visiting bands and welcomes around four each year.

St Mary’s own band range in age from their late 20s to their 70s.
